Just 26 babies were entrusted with the local organization last year, the lowest number since 2011, when there were 35. It’s a surprising decline, considering the figure once peaked at 253 in 2014.

The latest system aids pregnant women facing economic, psychological or social hardship to give birth anonymously under a medical institution’s proper care. The goal is to prevent unassisted childbirths and ensure that every birth is swiftly reported to the government.

2024년 7월 시행된 한국의 보호출산제와 출생통보제의 영향으로 베이비박스에 맡겨지는 아기는 크게 줄었다. 이 제도는 경제적·심리적·사회적 어려움을 겪는 임신부가 의료기관의 적절한 관리를 받으며 익명으로 출산할 수 있도록 돕는다. 의료진의 도움 없이 이뤄지는 출산을 막고 모든 출생이 신속하게 정부에 신고되도록 하기 위해서다.

This year, through the end of April, there were nine infants left at the baby box. Two of them were referred to the protected childbirth system and five returned home, which Jusarang Community, a local organization founded by pastor Lee Jong-rak that provides support to vulnerable mothers and their children, explained was the result of expanded counseling.

The wooden flight of stairs leading up to the hatch is adorned with phrases such as, “A counselor is waiting to help mothers and children,” “Consultation guides mothers and children toward safety” and “Thank you for choosing to protect your baby.” The inside of the baby box is cozily lined with soft bedding and fitted with an electric heating pad and an air conditioning system that switches on depending on the weather. The overall interior means to convey a sense of solace to troubled mothers, that everything would be alright.

베이비박스로 이어지는 나무 계단에는“엄마와 아이에게 도움을 드리기 위해 상담사가 기다리고 있습니다”, “상담은 엄마와 아이를 가장 안전한 길로 인도합니다”, “소중한 생명을 지켜주셔서 감사합니다” 등의 문구가 적혀 있다. 베이비박스 안쪽은 부드러운 침구로 포근하게 꾸며져 있으며, 날씨에 따라 작동하는 전기장판과 냉난방 시스템도 갖춰져 있다. 전체적인 내부 공간은 힘겨운 상황에 놓인 산모들에게 모든 것이 괜찮아질 것이라는 위안을 전하려는 듯했다.

The nursery inside the facility is empty, but muffled conversations could be heard from the counseling room for parents who bring in babies.
